How Many Days in Peru? 7 vs 10 vs 14 for Families and Friend Groups

If your group is going to Peru and Machu Picchu, how many days are needed? It may depend more on abilities, interests, and how much travel time you lose to flights — not so much on the itinerary you choose.
Let's break down the factors needed to explore your options.
A 7-day and 9-day trip are the total days in Peru. There are an extra 2 travel days sit on either side. Add 4 travel days if you're traveling from Canada, US or Europe. So a 7-day Machu Picchu Walking Vacation is about 11 days door-to-door. A 9-day package is about 13. Think of it like this: “7 is possible, 10 is comfortable, 14 is unhurried."
Each group determines their travel window differently. The person with the least time off, or the school/work calendar. Choose one anchor activity per day plus optional add-ons. Booking trains and tickets as a block of 6+ needs advance planning. One illness or lost bag is more likely in a larger group.
Sleep in Cusco on arrival. Why?
Sacred Valley is lower, and that advice is copied everywhere. For most first-time groups, 9,000 ft vs 11,000 ft is not worth night one in a place with little medical care, few ATMs, little local transport, and shops spread out. In Cusco you're near the hotel, walk the flat historic center, and a doctor can come to the hotel if someone is unwell. For a group, if one person feels awful, the whole group is stuck wherever you parked them. Adios trips already build in time to adjust. We include extra days with easy logistics to pace the activities, not a valley hideout where everything has to be pre-planned and arranged.
The only time this advice should be changed is if you have a known condition and have had previous bad experiences at altitudes over 9000 ft, or your doctor recommends staying in the lower altitude.
Different abilities: split your group
For groups with members who have different abilities or interests, it's ideal to consider splitting up for short periods of time to enhance the experience and comfort of all members.
Short 2-Day Inca Trail Hike
This mini-adventure is best for groups who already have days in Cusco and want the hike over the Sun Gate without four days of camping. If your group has mixed abilities, we can split the group up for 1 day. Some will hike, while everyone else can take the train and meet at your hotel in Aguas Calientes.
Benefit: one focused highlight, one split, everyone in a hotel - no camping. guided tour of Machu Picchu together on the 2nd day.
Limit: no arrival buffer, no Sacred Valley day trip the day before the hike, no “whole trip.” It's a rush unless your goal is to focus solely on one highlight during your trip, and you'll be skipping the days that allow mixed ages to explore historical sites together. We can fix that of course, if you have more time.
7-Day Machu Picchu Walking Vacation
This is the full small-trip version: arrive Cusco, easy city walking, outskirts walk, Sacred Valley, then Machu Picchu (short Inca Trail if permits allow, train if not), then back. Hotels, breakfasts, a guide, time built in to adjust to higher altitude.
Benefit: a real Peru week for families and friend groups who want to walk, not camp. Mixed abilities can still split on the Inca Trail hike day and in Cusco. Cost stays in the 3-star hotel double/triple range.
Limit: after you add international travel, there is little spare time. You could split up and some group members can continue 4D to an Amazon lodge, or 3 more days to Lake Titicaca. Ultimately flying directly back to Lima to return home.
9-day Inca Trail package with Cusco and Sacred Valley.
This is the “nobody is rushed” length. The 9-day trip can be 3-itineraries-in-one for 3 sub groups. Hotels and tours will overlap and each group will peel off for their specialized hike. Group #1 is ideal for hard-core hikers who want the challenge of hiking the entire 4D Inca Trail. Group #2 and Group #3 would stay in hotels with a separate itinerary for day tours and short hikes or walks based on their needs. Then Group #2 would hike the 1 Day Inca Trail while Group #3 takes the train. All 3 groups arrive in Aguas Calientes at the same hotel. The next day everyone enjoys a grand guided tour of Machu Picchu. Group members who need to go home, can depart Cusco on Day 9. Other members could continue to 4 days in an Amazon jungle lodge or 3 days to Lake Titicaca. Ultimatley flying direclty back to Lima for the trip home.
Benefit: adjustment before and recovery after the trail, flexibility to satisfy the needs of group members with different abilities, with just enough time to be together, option to return home from Cusco, or continue to new adventures. Room to split the group, room for one day when someone is in a bad mood, and a trip that still feels like a vacation when 6+ people do not move at the same speed.
Limit: needs to be booked in advance so that hotels and vehicles can be reserved for the size of the group.
Perspective: shorter trips focus on one or more highlights; longer trips have flexibility without the rush to get there and enjoy quickly then go home. It's worth it to spend at least 1 day of leisure to explore Cusco on your own and can easily be done on foot.
