2-Day Inca Trail Looks Sold Out. October Is Not.

In case you have been searching for hiking permits for the Short 2-Day Inca Trail hike during the month of October, they looked sold out. That is not the whole story.

On 17 September 2026, Vidal and I logged into the official portal that licensed tour operators use. For weeks, the 2-day Inca Trail in October appeared to be sold out except for a few days at the end of the month. Today we logged in (Sept 17) to find 20 days showing permits available.

What the Peru government found

Peru’s Ministry of Culture audited the permit system and found at least eight tourism companies had used bots to block and hold those permits which normally expire every 3 hours unless they're paid for. Culture Minister Alberto Beingolea and Tourism Minister Rogers Valencia said automated holds were blocking real travelers, including people who already had flights.

The old system let a company hold a permit for three hours. If they didn't sell it, the bots manipulated the holds over and over. The ministries are replacing the system with direct sale: pay within about 15 minutes, permit issued using the visitor’s unique passport data. Unpaid tickets go back on sale. Daily visitor limits on the Inca Trail network are not changing. The change is how hiking permits are held and paid.

We are a licensed tour operator. We do not hold tickets we have not paid for, and we are not going to name the companies in the audit. The numbers are public. That is enough.

What this means if you already booked flights to Peru

Things to know:

• Classic 4-day Inca Trail permits. Those still sell out. Do not assume October is open there just because the 2-day trail has space.
• 2-day Inca Trail permits. That is the short hike to Machu Picchu. On 17 September, the operator portal still showed 20 days of availability in October.
• If you are two to five hikers and you can travel in October, it is worth asking us to check. If you are a family or club of six or more, last-minute October is harder: you still need trains, hotel rooms, and a tour guide. The same rules apply; permits cannot be refunded, transferred, or moved once they are issued.

What to do next for your short Inca Trail hike
