The good news is that in 2016, the Peruvian government added 250 more permits for the 2-day Inca Trail hike.  Even when permits for 4 day Inca Trail have sold out, it may still be possible to get permits for the 2-day Inca Trail hike.

Update. June 16, 2017:  effective immediately, all permits for both 4-day and 1-day Inca Trail are now viewable to the public on the official government website. Permits for each hike are listed separately.  However consumers cannot buy their own permits.  They must book through a licensed tour operator.

Before 2016 you may have heard about the limit of 500 people per day allowed on the Inca Trail, including porters and guides.  The 500 places were available for both the easy 1-day hike as well as the 4-day Inca Trail hike.

Beginning in 2016, the Peruvian government uploaded another 250 permits per day to the system, designated for the 2-day Inca Trail hike.  The original 500 places would be solely for hikers, guides and porters on the 4-day Inca Trail hike.  Good news for hikers, operators and government bank accounts.

The government website has always been open to the public who can buy entry tickets to Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu. Alhough the consumer could not buy Inca Trail permits online, they could at least check the availability.  All of which can still be done.
