Every year from January 2 until April 30, all trains from Poroy station will depart from/arrive at the station in Ollantaytambo. There will be no train service to/from Poroy. Perurail will provide buses at Ollantaytambo to continue the service to Cusco. The section of train tracks between Ollantaytambo and Poroy is closed for safety reasons, and repair, during the rainy season.  Bi-modal (bus+train) is offered during the rainy season.

Train service from the Urubamba station at Tambo del Inka hotel will not be affected.  And for travelers booking Hiram Bingham luxury train, Perurail will provide bus service from the Poroy station to the station in Ollantaytambo where they will board the train.

Perurail does not provide transfers from Cusco city center to any of their stations.  It is up to the passenger to make their own arrangements.  Hiram Bingham passengers need to make arrangements to get to the Poroy station where they board the bus and drive about 1.5 hours to the station in Ollantaytambo.  All other passengers need to arrange their own transfers to the Ollantaytambo station.

Transfers from Cusco to Perurail Trail Stations

Travelers are on their own to set up transportation to train stations in Ollantaytambo as well as Poroy. There is no public or officially organized transportation.  Ollantaytambo will continue to be the main station for trains going to and from Machu Picchu.  In Ollantaytambo there is access to accommodations if needed, restaurants and cafes in the village, and more choices for transportation.

This change only applies to independent travelers who book their own Perurail tickets online.  Groups traveling with licensed tour operators including Adios Adventure Travel can expect the train station transfers to be provided. If you're not sure if this service is included, it's always a good idea to ask.  All groups traveling with Adios Adventure Travel have roundtrip transfer service included.  (unless other arrangements are requested.)

What if you're traveling independently and you need to arrange your own transfer service?

  • ask your hotel to set it up in advance
  • ask your guide or operator
  • wait until you are in Cusco and set it up yourself.  It should be quite easy to find service from Ollantaytambo to Cusco because taxis, collectivos and buses will meet the trains looking for passengers going to Cusco.

From Cusco, a 1-way transfer in private taxi to Ollantaytambo can be anywhere from $50-$80 depending on how many people are riding.  It's acceptable to negotiate with drivers.

From Ollantaytambo back to Cusco, a regular taxi will charge $30-$50 for one way transfer depending on how many people are in your group. Mini-buses will charge anywhere from $10-$15 pp.  And the least expensive are the local "collectivos" who may charge as little as $3-$5 for shared ride back to Cusco.

Unless you're paying full price for a taxi, don't expect to be delivered to your hotel door.  Once you get to Cusco, they may drop you in San Pedro market, or San Francisco Plaza.  From there you can walk to your hotel or hail a local taxi.
