You scratched it off your bucket list.  But what if you have the chance to go back to Machu Picchu?  Should you do it?

Most people visit a site recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of the World only once.  It takes alot of effort to make a "trip-of-a-lifetime" happen.  There is the planning, the expense and the worry.  As much as we anticpate the joyous moments of travel, we worry about the potential for disasters.  It's a toll that most of us tolerate for the chance to explore the world in which we live.

Here's a few reasons you might want to go back to Machu Picchu:

  • to hike the Inca Trail.  The majority of visitors to Machu Picchu arrive by train.  Some are surprised to discover there is an alternative and

perhaps more amazing way to enter the ruins.  Visitors arriving by train come to Machu Picchu from below.  Visitors arrving by foot, come from above.  Kind of like angels.
  • you're celebrating a milestone; marriage, anniversary or birthday.  If you want to remember THAT occassion, go to Machu Picchu.
  • you want to take a special person someplace really special.  There might not be any better way to recognize the worthiness of a special person than to take them to Machu Picchu.  Especially, if you've already been there!
  • your finances have changed.  For the better.  And you have the means to go in style or spend more time.
  • the first time you went, you were with someone who wanted to stay in the "golden birdcage" of luxury.  You gazed out the tapestry-ensconced windows of your Inca-inspired-but-not-really-authentic palacial digs, longing to touch or smell the authentic streets and trails of the real Peru.
  • things have changed at the destination.  You might have missed some of the side trips on the first go around.  Lake Titicaca is one day travel from Cusco.  The Amazon rain forest is the next-door neighbor to Machu Picchu.
  • you have the means to go as many times as you like.  You like it!  It's like your favorite fancy restaurant.  You can go back.

What does it feel like to revisit an old friend?  I've been there close to 10 times. Each time I visit it's like visiting a long-time friend who I don't get to see very often, but whose company I enjoy immensely.
