The last thing anyone booking a trip to South America needs to worry about is having their guided tour or Inca Trail hike to Machu Picchu cancelled by the tour operator. But there are circumstances in which a tour operator may cancel your trip.  Reasons may include insufficient bookings which make it unprofitable to run a trip.

Operators may confirm your reservation and take your deposit payment months in advance. assuming that others will add on. It occasionally happens that other bookings do not match up with your travel dates and the operator may be left with a tour that loses money. The operator may ask you the following:

  • to pay higher rate to continue with the scheduled tour as a private booking for your group.
  • ask you to shift your dates one way or the other to align with other groups.

To avoid having your vacation plans crumble beneath you, make sure you understand the terms before you agree to them.  What are your rights and responsiblities?

  • before you book, make sure you know what the tour operator policy is if not enough people join your scheduled tour.  Will they guarantee the agreed-upon itinerary at the quoted rate?  For the specified dates?
  • if you do decide to go ahead with the reservation, check with your travel insurance provider to see if you may be covered for this kind of change.

There are a few legitimate reasons for cancelling any tour, trek or organzed activity.  These may include:

  • traveler does not complete payment for trip according to agreed upon terms
  • traveler makes changes to itinerary that do not align with original schedule
  • natural or man-made disaster makes it unsafe to run the activity or guided tour
  • other events beyond the control of the operator or the travelers make it impossible to complete the tour

Adios Adventure Travel has a policy that we will not cancel any agreed-upon tour, hike or activity unless circumstances beyond our control make it impossible to complete. We guarantee the quoted price and the tour, regardless of how many other people join. We realize travelers need to have confidence in an operator so they can book their flights, hotels and other tours and activities.

If you need travel insurance or travel protection, make sure you buy the right policy. Credit cards that offer travel protection may not cover the cost of ground expenses and activities such as train tickets, entry tickets, guide services and local transportation.

Working with a responsible tour operator is one less thing you have to worry about when planning your big trip to South America.
