Are changes happening to entrance fees at Machu Picchu?  Yes. The office of Ministerio de Cultura in Peru has made changes to entrance tickets to Machu Picchu. They offer an "afternoon" ticket which allows entry daily at 1300 for a reduced rate.  This offer is for Peruvian nationals and foreigners.  (on the official government website they refer to the ticket as the "evening" ticket with entry at 1300.  But the opening hours have not changed.  It's still 6 am - 5 pm)

Here's why they are making the changes.  The park is the most crowded and congested in the mornings.  Particularly when the day visitors arrive by train.  One strategy to reduce the congestion is to encourage visitors to come later in the day and pay less to do it.  Another strategy implemented in September 2016 is that a new exit gate has been opened and now all visitors must follow one-way paths.  Click here to read the full details about those changes in Machu Picchu.

And in case you're hoping that the park will stay open later, here's why they can't.  The reason Machu Picchu closes at 5 pm is because it starts getting dark at that time.  The park is not lighted nor is it wired for electricity.  There's no way to accommodate visitors safely at night.  There are drop offs and terraces and ledges without any fencing or guardrails. The potential for accidents would be sky high. There's no plan to open the park at night.

None of the changes to fees affects the entrance fees or visiting hours for foreigners.  The Peruvian government knows they have to preserve the character and historical integrity of the ancient citadel for future generations, while simultaneously allowing thousands of visitors daily access.  It's not an easy task.  But this idea is a great solution to the problem, without limiting access for visitors.  It's a win/win.
