Bike and Hike to Machu Picchu - 4 Days

From glacier to jungle, Bike & Hike offers an alternative route to Machupicchu, which combines downhill biking with hiking on old Inca trails. Historians may agree that our ancient Incan ancestors didn't travel by bike, but we know & love our bikes now.

Our support vehicle takes you from Cusco to the starting point in the jungle. Along the way we do some mountain biking before our stop in Santa Maria. From here we start our hike through farm lands to the jungle and a small village called Santa Teresa and then on to the town of Aguas Calientes, with Machu Picchu just a half hour away.

Itinerary - 4 Days $650 pp  (we recommend that everyone arrive at least 2 days prior to starting this tour to  acclimatize to the local altitude - Cusco/11,000 ft)

Day 1 From Cusco: our support vehicle picks you up, then heads for the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Our crew takes you up, up into the mountains towards the glacier and a place called Abra Malaga. From here you’ll mount your metal steed and start your descent . Ride with gusto or take time to smell the jungle, the choice is yours. You’ll pedal your way into a cloud forest and the town of Santa Maria with time to explore the town, enjoy dinner and over night in a small hostal.

Day 2 Santa Maria/Santa Teresa:  after breakfast, we start a six to seven-hour hike to our campsite in Santa Teresa. The trek takes us along well-preserved Inca trail, through forests abounding in wild orchids and bromeliads. We'll hike across coffee and coca plantations with breathtaking scenery full of brightly-colored birds, parrots, butterflies. In the afternoon we arrive in Santa Teresa where we set up camp for dinner and our overnight.

Day 3 Santa Teresa/Aguas Calientes:  following breakfast, we start our hike by crossing the Vilcanota River. We will cross in a hanging basket or "oroya," one of the most exciting experiences of our journey, (or walk cross the bridge.) Once we recover, it will take us 20 minutes to walk to the hydroelectric station village. We'll explore the archaeological ruins of Intihuatana (Sun dial) and eat lunch. After a short rest, we continue for another two hours towards Aguas Calientes, where we arrive around 2 pm or 3 pm. We'll have an overnight in a hotel with dinner in one of many restaurants.

Day 4 Aguas Calientes/Machu Picchu/Cusco:  we'll get up early to enjoy the sunrise over one of the wonders of the modern world, the legendary citadel of Machu Picchu. Our guided tour includes a two to three hour visit to the citadel. For those who’d like to stay longer, you can make arrangements to meet your tour guide on time in Aguas Calientes to return to Cusco by train.
